Let cost price of 400 Books= Rs. 400
Thus, selling price of 320 Books= Rs. 400
Cost price of 320 Books= Rs. 320
Profit Percent= \frac{400+320}{320}\times 100

=(5+10-\frac{5\times 10}{100})%
=14.5%
And, Single equivalent discount for successive discounts of 14.5 % and 20%
=(14.5+20-frac{14.5 \times 20}{100})%

Hence, Successive discounts of 5%, 10% and 20% is equivalent to a single discount of 31.6%

Let the second discount be x%.
According to the problem,
(100-x)% of 90% of 720 = 550.80
On solving above equation, we get
100-x = 85
or x = 15%

Let number of bad apples thrown away = x
Remaining apples = 240 - x
Selling price = (240 - x) x 3.50 = 840 - 3.5x
